What happens after you submit your self assessment tax return?

You've gathered your paperwork, worked out your figures and finally submitted your tax return.

But what happens next?

If you're new to self assessment, it's completely normal to have questions about what happens after filing.

Here's what to expect.

1. HMRC receives your return

Once your tax return is successfully submitted online, you'll normally receive a submission confirmation.

This confirms HMRC has received your return, although it doesn't necessarily mean HMRC has checked or agreed every figure.

It's a good idea to keep a copy of your completed tax return and submission confirmation for your records.

2. You'll receive your tax calculation

Your tax calculation shows how much tax is due based on the information reported.

If you've already paid tax through PAYE or made payments on account, those amounts will be taken into consideration when determining what remains payable.

3. You may have tax to pay

For the 2025/26 tax year, any outstanding self assessment tax is generally due by 31 January 2027.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to make payments on account towards the following tax year. These are advance payments based on your previous tax liability.

For some people, this can make the January payment larger than expected, particularly in their first year of self assessment.

4. You might be due a refund

If you've overpaid tax, you may be entitled to a refund.

How this is processed depends on your circumstances and the information HMRC holds.

5. Keep your records

Submitting your tax return doesn't mean you can immediately throw away all your paperwork!

HMRC requires self-employed individuals to keep appropriate business records for a specified period, generally at least five years after the relevant 31 January submission deadline.

And that's it!

Once your return has been filed and you've dealt with any outstanding payments, you can turn your attention to the next tax year.

Keeping your records organised throughout the year will make the next return much easier.
