What documents do you need for your self assessment tax return?
Updated: 2 hours ago
Preparing your self assessment tax return doesn't need to involve hunting through a year's worth of emails and paperwork. A little preparation can make the whole process much easier.
Not sure what you'll need? Here's a helpful starting point.
Your personal details
You'll usually need:
Your full name, address and date of birth.
Your national insurance number.
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), if you have one.
Details of any relevant changes to your circumstances.
Your UTR is the reference HMRC uses to identify your self assessment record.
If you're employed
You may need:
Your P60 showing your employment income and tax deducted.
A P45 if you left a job during the year.
A P11D if you received taxable employment benefits.
Details of any other employment income.
If you had more than one employer during the tax year, you'll need the relevant information for each employment.
If you're self-employed
You'll usually need records of your business income and expenses for the tax year.
This could include:
A spreadsheet or accounting software report.
Sales and income records.
A summary of allowable business expenses.
Details of any relevant business assets or equipment purchases.
Supporting invoices and receipts where needed.
The more organised your records are, the easier it will be to prepare your return accurately.
If you've received dividends or savings interest
You may need dividend statements and details of interest received from banks or savings accounts.
Remember, even if some income falls within a tax-free allowance, it may still be relevant to your overall tax calculation.
Other information you might need
Depending on your circumstances, you may also need details of:
Personal pension contributions.
Gift Aid donations.
Student loan repayments.
Child benefit received by you or your partner.
Payments on account already made to HMRC.
Other taxable income.
Not every section will apply to you.
